So good, this video, wow nicely done. Honestly, it is rare to find a music video that so encapsulates the artistic reference and poetic license of the musician and artist. I don’t know Seattle’s Matt Badger, but this is a work of art, and moreover, it perfectly portrays the artist’s narrative.

Seattle’s Dark Details (Chris Cunningham) directs the video, while Dylan Priest handles the cinematography. The filming and overall production is spot on. Love the softness in the capture, the contrast, and the warm tones in the colorization. The story is translated brilliantly, as shared in the artist’s words here:

The Fold is a story depicting a person who, finding themselves down on their luck and washed out of society, decides to flip their current narrative and embrace an alternate version of reality reflecting the deep-seated feelings of resentment and disenfranchisement towards the “rat-race” mentality that pervades the modern world. After shedding his transient carapace, he bares his inner self-confident and brazen form to the world in a whimsical and exalted release. Chaos and hijinks ensue as the fantasy-driven actions of the protagonist clash with the boundaries of polite society and result in conflict with the unsuspecting citizens of an affluent urban neighborhood.

Normally I wouldn’t copy and paste the description by the artist, but I love the writing and the way it’s told. I think I am just drawn to the artsy nature of this tune. I find some nice comparison with Hawksley Workman or perhaps a much younger Rufus Wainwright (pulling my Canadian references here…). The poetic flair in the writing, the piano lead, and dramatic playfulness in the vocal really draw me in.

Well done.
